This woodblock print of fruit by Yasui Sotaro (1888–1955), one of Japan’s leading modern painters, reflects his refined sense of form and color. Known primarily for his oil paintings, Yasui translated his compositional skills into the medium of printmaking. The rounded shapes of the fruit are simplified yet full of presence, while the flat surfaces of the woodblock highlight a decorative elegance unique to this medium. Combining modern sensibility with traditional technique, Yasui created a still life that is both modest and sophisticated.
